CHAPTER 23

It was a quarter to nine when Amy and I pulled into Rose McGee’s driveway. According to what Amy had learned, the woman lived alone in a small house on Bayou Tail Lane, so I was surprised to see three people standing in the driveway when we stepped out of my Tahoe.

“Mrs. McGee?” Amy asked the shorter of the two women. She had dark features and held a cordless phone in her hand. “Did you call the police department?”

The lady nodded and turned her big brown eyes to her companions. “These are my neighbors, Willie and Judy Moore,” she said. “I asked them to stay with me until y’all got here. I’m really freaked out right now.”

I cocked my head to the side and studied Judy Moore. I was sure I’d never seen Willie, but Judy looked vaguely familiar. I’d definitely heard Willie’s name before, but I knew I’d never met the man. “Willie Moore,” I said, turning my attention back to him. “That name sounds familiar.”

The man’s eyes turned to slits and his jaw hardened for just a second, but then he relaxed. “My name should sound familiar.” His face fell and his voice was sad. “My older brother was Walter Moore.”

I frowned at the mention of Walter Moore’s name. That was a chapter of my life I’d rather forget.

Willie rubbed a hand down the back of his neck and it appeared he was feeling for something that wasn’t there—a chill, perhaps? He took a breath. “Just so you know…I’ve got no hard feelings about my brother. I wouldn’t have said the same thing a couple of years ago, but—thanks to Father Ezekiel’s teachings—I’ve learned forgiveness.”

I didn’t know what to say. While the incident with Walter Moore must’ve been horrible for his family, it certainly wasn’t a picnic for Susan and me—and everything that had happened was his fault, not ours. I decided to change the subject. “So, I take it y’all attend Ezekiel’s church?”

Willie lifted a shoulder. “I don’t attend anymore, but Judy never misses a service.”

“I attend the church, too,” Rose said. “While most of the congregation comes from Chateau, there’re a few of us in town who are members.”

“Those of us in the church look out for each other,” Judy explained. She frowned. “These are certainly some troubling times, and we have to be near each other now more than ever. Do you know who hurt Father Ezekiel? Was this an act of terror? Was he persecuted for his faith? I heard that someone sprayed graffiti on the church a couple of weeks ago. Could this be related? Are other members in danger?”

I shook my head, still trying to figure out where I’d seen Judy before. I hadn’t heard about the graffiti, but I knew it wasn’t related. I knew why Ezekiel was killed—I just didn’t know who did it. However, I wasn’t about to tell these people what we knew so far, so I just told them I believed it to be an isolated incident.
